“Give Lewis a kiss, Cyril!” Celia yapped.

In the Winskis’ lemon-coloured car with the peeling white stripe, Hereward was sitting next to what Lewis thought at first was an old bathmat. It turned out to be a puli dog with cord-like fur so matted it was impossible to tell which end of the dog was which.

One end of the dog perched its paws lazily on Lewis’s forearm and a tongue appeared.
